This Handbook was prepared as background material for the conference, Emerging
Trends in Managed Care: Opportunities and Challenges for the Aging Network, convened by
Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services, Fernando M. Torres-Gil, and the
Administration on Aging on February 28 through March 1, 1996. Explicitly prepared for the
aging network, this Handbook offers definitions and outlines philosophies of managed care, as
well as suggests incentives, expected benefits and some possible drawbacks of managed care
against which to guard. The Handbook also reviews early experiences of seniors with Medicaid
managed care, and with managed care for long-term care; as well as explores models for
applying managed care principles to low-income and/or chronically-ill seniors in both acute care
and long-term care.
This Handbook is available from the Center at a price of $50.00; a reduced price of $30.00
