Caregiving is the focus of the third section; topics discussed include enhancing caregiving skills, managing caregiver stress, and caring of the caregiver. In the fourth and fifth sections, users determine the functional level of the person they are caring for and receive caregiving tips based on functional ability. An assessment scale ranges from one to six, with one representing normal functioning, and six representing a bedridden person who requires complete care. To determine functional level, caregivers can view videos of patients at each level and read about common symptoms. The final section includes advice from professionals and caregivers on issues such as behavior management and nursing home placement.

First Measured Century
ORIGINAL VIEWING DATE: 2001
CONTACT: PBS, Website www.pbs.org, Phone 877-727-7467
DESCRIPTION: Though history is often related in anecdotal terms, THE FIRST MEASURED CENTURY analyzes history through data and measurement. This statistical analysis reveals how the lives of everyday Americans changed over the last century. Discover a century where the United States went from half the size of the four biggest European nations to twice the size of all of them combined, and a nation of 50 million taking in 25 million immigrants in the course of two generations. Also witness the ever-changing flow of city populations, as America becomes the first majority suburban nation; a nation with less mobility today than in 1900; the sharp rise and slow fall of violent crime rates and the country's increasing wealth. A video and book are also available.

From ADL to V.A.: A Glossary of Long-Term Care Terms
AUTHORS: Marisa A. Scala
DATE: March 1999
DESCRIPTION: Having adequate information about programs and services is important when trying to make decisions about long-term care. The first step along the path toward an informed decision is understanding the language being used by those in the field. The field of long-term care is complex, with many different terms and acronyms that can be confusing to outsiders--and insiders, for that matter! This glossary attempts to help you navigate the field by enabling you to familiarize yourself with some of the words that you may encounter. As with any dictionary however, this glossary is by no means complete. The field of long-term care is changing rapidly, adding new terms all the time. But this glossary will serve as a good starting point for making care decisions.

Health Affairs
URL: http://www.healthaffairs.org
DESCRIPTION: Health Affairs is known for its ability to stay on the leading edge of health policy issues and to inform and influence health policy discussions at key junctures. For example, the thematic issue on prescription drugs in March/April 2000 was widely quoted and disseminated in recent debates on changes in Medicare's prescription drug policy, which many experts believe will be a hot issue topic during the new administration. An edition examining key health insurance coverage issues was released in January 2001, in time for use by the new Congress and Administration. Other future thematic topics on cutting-edge issues include the use of the Internet and health; medical innovation; and nonmedical determinants of health.

National Long-Term Care Survey
URL: http://cds.duke.edu/NLTCS_about.htm
DESCRIPTION: The 1982, 1984, 1989 and 1994 National Long-Term Care Surveys (NLTCS) are surveys of the entire aged population with a particular emphasis on the aged who are functionally impaired. The samples drawn from aged Medicare beneficiary enrollment files are nationally representative of both community and institutional residents. As sample persons are followed through the Medicare record system, virtually 100% of cases can be longitudinally tracked so declines, as well as increases in disability may be identified as well as exact date of death. NLTCS sample persons are followed until death and are permanently and continuously linked to the Medicare record system from which they are drawn. Linkage to the Medicare Part A and B service records extends from 1982 to 1995, so that detailed Medicare expenditures and types of service use may be studied.

National Mortality Followback Survey
URL: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs
DESCRIPTION: The National Mortality Followback Survey (NMFS), conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), is a nationally representative sample of adults age 15 and over who died in 1993. The NMFS provides a lifetime picture of life-style, health and socioeconomic status and service use, as well as the use of health and long-term care services prior to death. The NMFS was a collaborative effort involving twelve cosponsors, including ASPE. Since the frail elderly and other persons with disabilities are major users of health and long-term care services, it is important to have lifetime and prior-to-death estimates of their health, functional capacity, service use and expenditures and to be able to compare these data with data on the population as a whole. Information has been gathered on about 20,000 deaths. The NMFS supplements information from death certificates with information on important characteristics of the decedent.

DESCRIPTION: The OECD groups 30 member countries in an organisation that, most importantly, provides governments a setting in which to discuss, develop and perfect economic and social policy. They compare experiences, seek answers to common problems and work to co-ordinate domestic and international policies that increasingly in today's globalised world must form a web of even practice across nations. Their exchanges may lead to agreements to act in a formal way. But more often, their discussion makes for better informed work within their own governments on the spectrum of public policy and clarifies the impact of national policies on the international community. And it offers a chance to reflect and exchange perspectives with other countries similar to their own.

SeniorPlace
URL: http://www.SeniorPlace.com
DESCRIPTION: Health Spectrum Inc., a medical software provider, is rolling out a new internet-based patient referral network called SeniorPlace. Much of the SeniorPlace information will be available for free on the web site for consumers, particularly for consumers seeking facilities such as foster care or other lower-level care housing. But for more skilled service facilities, bed availability information will be sold on a subscription basis to hospitals and others who need quick access to long-term care referral information. SeniorPlace's program allows subscribers to sort by search criteria, which may be as specific as identifying a facility with the capacity to handle patients on a ventilator. SeniorPlace provides information related to all levels of long-term care. Offerings include the patient referral network, a list of providers and service profiles, health care and senior news and job openings. Health Spectrum also hopes to market web sites to long-term care facilities.

Stealing Time: The New Science of Aging
ORIGINAL VIEWING DATE: June 2, 1999
CONTACT: PBS, Website www.pbs.org
DESCRIPTION: As experts approach a fundamental understanding of how people age, the world is witnessing the birth of a new discipline: the science of aging. STEALING TIME: THE NEW SCIENCE OF AGING, this three-hour series airing on PBS (check local listings), offers startling evidence that the future may bring a doubling--perhaps a near tripling--of the average life span of human beings. Part One, "Quest for Immortality," concerns the natural history of aging, the "why" behind the aging process. The second part, "Turning Back the Clock," is about the "how," the mechanisms of aging and what can be done to fight them. The final hour, "Mastering the Mind," looks at the aging mind. The companion book, Stealing Time: The New Science of Aging by Fred Warshofsky, is published by TV Books.
