DESCRIPTION: This interactive program on CD-ROM is
intended for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease and related
dementias. The CD-ROM is divided into six sections. The first section explains
how to effectively use the program. The second section provides basic
information on dementia, including symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment, and
disease progression. Caregiving is the focus of the third section; topics
discussed include enhancing caregiving skills, managing caregiver stress, and
caring of the caregiver. In the fourth and fifth sections, users determine the
functional level of the person they are caring for and receive caregiving tips
based on functional ability. An assessment scale ranges from one to six, with
one representing normal functioning, and six representing a bedridden person
who requires complete care. To determine functional level, caregivers can view
videos of patients at each level and read about common symptoms. The final
section includes advice from professionals and caregivers on issues such as
behavior management and nursing home placement.

DESCRIPTION:
CarePathways.com is a World Wide Web community dedicated to optimizing a
family's access to valid information and creditable services about senior care
and housing options. It is their goal to educate families about the types of
care options available in order to better understand what might be the best
choice for aging loved ones. Access to the online databases facilitates the
difficult search for home care, assisted living, retirement homes, nursing
homes and other long-term care facilities. The site offers support to help
families identify their older loved one's needs and care requirements in order
to make sound decisions about the best senior housing and care. The site's
needs assessment provides a step-by-step assessment of an individual and
family's needs that serves as a starting point in the planning and decision
making process.
